A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 2.0/3.0/4.0/4.1/4.1.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Initial Sequence Number Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
FreeBSD 4.1.1 and earlier, and possibly other BSD-based OSes, uses an insufficient random number generator to generate initial TCP sequence numbers (ISN), which allows remote attackers to spoof TCP connections.
The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2000 by FIRST (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ftp.freebsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0916. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10443 (TCP/IP Predictable ISN (Initial Sequence Number) Generation Weakness), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family General and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 82005 (Predictable TCP Initial Sequence Numbers Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (10443). The entries 13695, 14800, 16232 and 16233 are pretty similar.
