The CiWebHitsFile component in Microsoft Indexing Services for Windows 2000 allows remote attackers to conduct a cross site scripting (CSS) attack via a CiRestriction parameter in a .htw request, aka the "Indexing Services Cross Site Scripting" vulnerability.

The weakness was presented 12/19/2000 by Georgi Guninski as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2000-0942. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10956 (Microsoft Indexing Services .htw Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability (MS00-084)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 979.
