NMPI (Name Management Protocol on IPX) listener in Microsoft NWLink does not properly filter packets from a broadcast address, which allows remote attackers to cause a broadcast storm and flood the network.

The issue has been introduced in 08/24/1995. The weakness was released 12/19/2000 with Microsoft as MS00-073 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2000-0980. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely.
