A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in FreeBSD 5.3/5.4 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code of the component IPsec Authentication Handler. The manipulation as part of a AES-XCBC-MAC leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
The AES-XCBC-MAC algorithm in IPsec in FreeBSD 5.3 and 5.4, when used for authentication without other encryption, uses a constant key instead of the one that was assigned by the system administrator, which can allow remote attackers to spoof packets to establish an IPsec session.
The bug was discovered 07/27/2005. The weakness was released 07/27/2005 by Yukiyo Akisada with Yokogawa Electric Corporation (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2359 since 07/26/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 54441 (AIX 6.1 TL 6 : bos.cluster.rte (U835909)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org. A possible mitigation has been published 6 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
