Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Attachment Virus Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity.

The weakness was disclosed 07/27/2005 by Tan Chew Keong with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at files.altn.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Alt-N. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 8.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at altn.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
