A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in AT&T WinVNC 3.3.3r7. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component GET Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in AT&T WinVNC (Virtual Network Computing) server 3.3.3r7 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a long HTTP GET request when the DebugLevel registry key is greater than 0.
The weakness was released 05/03/2001 with Core as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0168. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/22/2024).
It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38022 (ATT WinVNC Server Buffer Overflow and Weak Authentication Vulnerabilities).
It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting DebugLevel = 0
.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6026), SecurityFocus (BID 2306†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-6524†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-16605. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
