The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. The bug was discovered 02/16/2010. The weakness was disclosed 05/03/2001 by Matt Moore with WESTPOINT as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2001-0228. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86368 (GoAhead WebServer URL Encoded Slash Directory Traversal Vulnerability).

Proper firewalling of is able to address this issue.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (9519). The entries 16922, 18424, 18425 and 19593 are pretty similar.
