Gene6 G6 FTP Server 2.0 (aka BPFTP Server 2.10) allows attackers to read file attributes outside of the web root via the (1) SIZE and (2) MDTM commands when the "show relative paths" option is not enabled.
The weakness was disclosed 06/18/2001 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at atstake.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0263. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27066 (Gene6 BPFTP Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
