A vulnerability was found in CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup up to 11.1 (Backup Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Backup Agent. Stack-based buffer overflow in the Backup Agent for Microsoft SQL Server in BrightStor ARCserve Backup Agent for SQL Server 11.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string sent to port (1) 6070 or (2) 6050.
The bug was discovered 04/25/2005. The weakness was shared 08/03/2005 by anonymer Benutzer with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1272 since 04/26/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at metasploit.org. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 100 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19387 (CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup Agent for Windows Long String Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11683. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3683.
