Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP Kerberos denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Unknown vulnerability in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 domain controllers allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted Kerberos message.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was published 08/09/2005 by Tony Chin with Shell as MS05-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1981 since 06/17/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2000 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19405 (MS05-042: Vulnerability in Kerberos Could Allow Denial of Service, Information Disclosure and Spoofing (899587)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90269 (Kerberos Could Allow Denial of Service, Information Disclosure, and Spoofing (MS05-042)).

Applying the patch MS05-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3680.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21625), Tenable (19405), SecurityFocus (BID 14519†), OSVDB (18608†) and Secunia (SA16368†). Similar entry is available at VDB-1691. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
