A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Samba 2.0.7 (File Transfer Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
Samba before 2.2.0 allows local attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack using (1) a printer queue query, (2) the more command in smbclient, or (3) the mput command in smbclient.
The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2001 by Marcus Meissner with Caldera as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2001-0406. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14885 (Debian DSA-048-3 : samba), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6396), Tenable (14885), SecurityFocus (BID 2617†), OSVDB (13871†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-15203†). The entries VDB-235091, VDB-235092, VDB-235093 and VDB-241965 are pretty similar.
