Format string vulnerabilities in iPlanet Directory Server 4.1.4 and earlier (LDAP) allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated by the PROTOS LDAPv3 test suite.

The weakness was shared 07/16/2001 with CERT as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2001-1308. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
