A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing in the library fp30reg.dll of the component Visual Studio RAD Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Visual Studio RAD Support sub-component of FrontPage Server Extensions allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a long registration request (URL) to fp30reg.dll.

The bug was discovered 04/13/2001. The weakness was released 06/25/2001 by NSFOCUS with Microsoft as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0341. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 73 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.
