A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.49 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation of the argument Byte-Range
with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The byte-range filter in Apache 2.0 before 2.0.54 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via an HTTP header with a large Range field.
The weakness was shared 08/25/2005 by Filip Sneppe as Bug 29962 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at issues.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2728 since 08/29/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19535 (GLSA-200508-15 : Apache 2.0: Denial of Service vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86713 (Apache CGI Byterange Request Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11511.
