Details
A vulnerability was found in SSH and OpenSSH (SSH Server Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The SSH protocols 1 and 2 (aka SSH-2) as implemented in OpenSSH and other packages have various weaknesses which can allow a remote attacker to obtain the following information via sniffing: (1) password lengths or ranges of lengths, which simplifies brute force password guessing, (2) whether RSA or DSA authentication is being used, (3) the number of authorized_keys in RSA authentication, or (4) the lengths of shell commands.
The weakness was released 08/22/2001 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0572. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/05/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14776 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : openssh (MDKSA-2001:033-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38034 (SSH passive information disclosure vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1324.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6783), Tenable (14776) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-2055†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
