Buffer overflow in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a malformed Windows Media Station (.NSC) file.
The weakness was disclosed 09/20/2001 by Pauli Ojanpera with Microsoft as MS01-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0541. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
