Linux Kernel up to 2.6.12 raw_sendmsg stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function raw_sendmsg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the sendmsg function call in the Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.13.1 allows local users execute arbitrary code by calling sendmsg and modifying the message contents in another thread.

The bug was discovered 09/09/2005. The weakness was shared 09/09/2005 by Alexander Viro with Red Hat as Bug 166248 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2490 since 08/08/2005. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20466 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:235)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117852 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:663)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22217) and Tenable (20466). The entries 1234, 1561, 1592 and 1681 are related to this item.
