Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.6 XBM Image heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.6 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component XBM Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in Firefox before 1.0.7 and Mozilla Suite before 1.7.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an XBM image file that ends in a large number of spaces instead of the expected end tag.

The weakness was released 09/23/2005 by jackerror as MFSA2005-58 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2701 since 08/26/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19835 (RHEL 4 : firefox (RHSA-2005:785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115281 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Firefox and Mozilla Suite (Mozilla Foundation MFSA 2005-58)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22373) and Tenable (19835). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 1757, 1758, 1764 and 1762.
