Internet Explorer 5.1 for Macintosh on Mac OS X allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by causing a BinHex or MacBinary file type to be downloaded, which causes the files to be executed if automatic decoding is enabled.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was shared 12/06/2001 with Microsoft as MS01-053 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2001-0720. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
