SGI Performance Co-Pilot up to 2.2 pmpost PCP_LOG_DIR/NOTICES symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in SGI Performance Co-Pilot up to 2.2. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the file PCP_LOG_DIR/NOTICES of the component pmpost. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The pmpost program in Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) before 2.2.1-3 allows a local user to gain privileges via a symlink attack on the NOTICES file in the PCP log directory (PCP_LOG_DIR).

The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2001 by Paul Starzetz (Website). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2001-0823. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional.

Upgrading to version 2.2.1-3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (6724).
