cURL/libcURL up to 7.76.1 Command Line Option CURLOPT_TELNETOPTIONS information disclosure
CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in cURL and libcURL up to 7.76.1 (Network Utility Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Command Line Option Handler. The manipulation of the argument
CURLOPT_TELNETOPTIONS with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
curl 7.7 through 7.76.1 suffers from an information disclosure when the `-t` command line option, known as `CURLOPT_TELNETOPTIONS` in libcurl, is used to send variable=content pairs to TELNET servers. Due to a flaw in the option parser for sending NEW_ENV variables, libcurl could be made to pass on uninitialized data from a stack based buffer to the server, resulting in potentially revealing sensitive internal information to the server using a clear-text network protocol.
The weakness was released 06/12/2021. The advisory is available at curl.se. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2021-22898 since 01/06/2021. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
