A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. ** DISPUTED ** RunAs (runas.exe) in Windows 2000 stores cleartext authentication information in memory, which could allow attackers to obtain usernames and passwords by executing a process that is allocated the same memory page after termination of a RunAs command. NOTE: the vendor disputes this issue, saying that administrative privileges are already required to exploit it, and the original researcher did not respond to requests for additional information.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was released 12/31/2001 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1517 since 07/14/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 683 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
