Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0 treats objects invoked on an HTML page with the codebase property as part of Local Computer zone, which allows remote attackers to invoke executables present on the local system through objects such as the popup object, aka the "Local Executable Invocation via Object tag" vulnerability.

The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was released 01/13/2002 as MS02-015 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0077. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 797 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
