Details
A vulnerability has been found in Squid Proxy up to 2.4.STABLE3 (Firewall Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component SNMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Memory leak in SNMP in Squid 2.4 STABLE3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service.
The weakness was presented 03/08/2002 by Jouko Pynnonen with Squid (Website). The advisory is shared for download at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0069. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13924 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : squid (MDKSA-2002:016-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 62011 (Squid Cache SNMP Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (8260), Tenable (13924), SecurityFocus (BID 4146†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4611†). See VDB-17966, VDB-17967, VDB-18475 and VDB-18476 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
