A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6.0 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Content Header Handler. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed Content-Disposition and Content-Type header fields that cause the application for the spoofed file type to pass the file back to the operating system for handling rather than raise an error message, aka the first variant of the "Content Disposition" vulnerability.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was published 05/29/2002 by Yuu Arai as MS02-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0193. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 933 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10861 (MS02-005: MSIE 5.01 5.5 6.0 Cumulative Patch (890923)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying the patch MS02-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
