Microsoft IIS 5.0/5.1 WebDAV IP Address information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft IIS 5.0/5.1 (Web Server). Affected is an unknown code of the component WebDAV. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (IP Address). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

IIS 5 and 5.1 supporting WebDAV methods allows remote attackers to determine the internal IP address of the system (which may be obscured by NAT) via (1) a PROPFIND HTTP request with a blank Host header, which leaks the address in an HREF property in a 207 Multi-Status response, or (2) via the WRITE or MKCOL method, which leaks the IP in the Location server header.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was presented 03/05/2002 by David Litchfield as not defined posting (NTBugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0422. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 747 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12113 (Web Server PROPFIND Method Internal IP Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1628.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (8385) and Tenable (12113). See 18497 and 18495 for similar entries.
