The Macro Security Model in Microsoft Excel 2000 and 2002 for Windows allows remote attackers to execute code by attaching an inline macro to an object within an Excel workbook, aka the "Excel Inline Macros Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 08/12/2002 by Darryl Higa as MS02-031 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0616. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110153 (Microsoft Excel and Word Cumulative Security Update (MS02-031)).
Applying the patch MS02-031 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
