Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 Data Access Components OpenRowSet memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 (Database Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function OpenRowSet of the component Data Access Components. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the Transact-SQL (T-SQL) OpenRowSet component of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 through 2.7 for SQL Server 7.0 or 2000 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a query that calls the OpenRowSet command.

The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 by David Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software as MS02-040 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0695. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11301 (MS02-040 / MS03-033: Unchecked buffer in MDAC Function (326573 / 823718)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Applying the patch MS02-040 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9734) and Tenable (11301). The entry 246 is pretty similar.
