Buffer overflows in Ethereal 0.9.4 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via (1) the BGP dissector, or (2) the WCP dissector.
The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 with Ethereal (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ethereal.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0821. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
