The mail function in PHP 4.x to 4.2.2 does not filter ASCII control characters from its arguments, which could allow remote attackers to modify mail message content, including mail headers, and possibly use PHP as a "spam proxy."
The bug was discovered 09/09/2003. The weakness was presented 09/09/2003 by Wojciech Purczynski with isec.pl as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0986. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
