Buffer overflow in SmartHTML Interpreter (shtml.dll) in Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) 2000 and 2002 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) or run arbitrary code, respectively, via a certain type of web file request.

The weakness was released 10/10/2002 by DiGiT with Digital Defense as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0692. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11311 (MS02-053: Microsoft FrontPage Extensions shtml.exe Remote Overflow (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90765 (Microsoft SmartHTML Interpreter Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (MS02-053)).
