dvips converter for Postscript files in the tetex package calls the system() function insecurely, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via certain print jobs, possibly involving fonts.
The bug was discovered 10/08/2002. The weakness was shared 10/28/2002 by Olaf Kirch with SuSE as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0836. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
