SSH up to 3.2.1 Process privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in SSH up to 3.2.1 (SSH Server Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Process Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

SSH Secure Shell for Servers and SSH Secure Shell for Workstations 2.0.13 through 3.2.1, when running without a PTY, does not call setsid to remove the child process from the process group of the parent process, which allows attackers to gain certain privileges.

The weakness was released 11/25/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1644 since 03/28/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11169 (SSH Secure Shell without PTY setsid() Function Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42404 (SSH Communications SSH Server Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10710), Tenable (11169), SecurityFocus (BID 6247†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1532†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-19157. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
