The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple SSH2 servers and clients do not properly handle large packets or large fields, which may allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via buffer overflow attacks, as demonstrated by the SSHredder SSH protocol test suite.
The weakness was published 12/23/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-1359. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/09/2018).
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48968 (SSH Malformed Packet Vulnerabilities - Cisco Systems), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38223 (Multiple Vendor SSH2 Implementation Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10870) and Tenable (48968). Similar entries are available at 19243, 19244 and 19246.
