The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Fetchmail 6.1.3 and earlier does not account for the "@" character when determining buffer lengths for local addresses, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a header with a large number of local addresses.
The bug was discovered 12/13/2002. The weakness was published 12/23/2002 by Stefan Esser (e-matters) (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1365. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13775 (SUSE-SA:2003:001: fetchmail), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
