The COM_CHANGE_USER command in MySQL 3.x before 3.23.54, and 4.x before 4.0.6, allows remote attackers to gain privileges via a brute force attack using a one-character password, which causes MySQL to only compare the provided password against the first character of the real password.
The weakness was disclosed 12/23/2002 by Stefan Esser (e-matters) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1374. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15049 (Debian DSA-212-1 : mysql - multiple problems), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19067 (MySQL COM_CHANGE_USER Password Length Account Compromise Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.23.54 or 4.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3525.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10847) and Tenable (15049). The entries 19251, 19253 and 19254 are pretty similar.
