Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file as_web.exe/as_web4.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting vulnerability (XSS) in (1) as_web.exe and (2) as_web4.exe in askSam Web Publisher 1 and 4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary script as other users via a URL.

The bug was discovered 05/04/2002. The weakness was published 12/31/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1727 since 06/21/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 241 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10629 (askSam Web Publisher Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1753.
