A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5/6.0 on Win 2000 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component ftp.htt. The manipulation of the argument hostname
with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in ftp.htt in Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0, when running on Windows 2000 with "Enable folder view for FTP sites" and "Enable Web content in folders" selected, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the hostname portion of an FTP URL.
The issue has been introduced in 07/08/2000. The weakness was shared 12/31/2002 by Eiji James Yoshida as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-2062 since 07/14/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 906 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
