OpenSSL up to 0.9.7 Block Cipher Padding s3_pkt.c ssl3_get_record missing encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.7 (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ssl3_get_record of the file s3_pkt.c of the component Block Cipher Padding. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

ssl3_get_record in s3_pkt.c for OpenSSL before 0.9.7a and 0.9.6 before 0.9.6i does not perform a MAC computation if an incorrect block cipher padding is used, which causes an information leak (timing discrepancy) that may make it easier to launch cryptographic attacks that rely on distinguishing between padding and MAC verification errors, possibly leading to extraction of the original plaintext, aka the "Vaudenay timing attack."

The bug was discovered 05/02/2002. The weakness was disclosed 02/19/2003 by Serge Vaudenay (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0078. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After 2 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at omen.vuagnoux.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1519 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13783 (SUSE-SA:2003:011: openssl), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 0.9.6i or 0.9.7a eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11369), Exploit-DB (22264), Tenable (13783), SecurityFocus (BID 6884†) and OSVDB (3945†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
