As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
miniserv.pl in (1) Webmin before 1.070 and (2) Usermin before 1.000 does not properly handle metacharacters such as line feeds and carriage returns (CRLF) in Base-64 encoded strings during Basic authentication, which allows remote attackers to spoof a session ID and gain root privileges.
The weakness was shared 03/03/2003 by Keigo Yamazaki (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0101. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14009 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : webmin (MDKSA-2003:025)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11887 (Webmin prior to 1.500 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.070 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11390), Exploit-DB (22275), Tenable (14009), SecurityFocus (BID 6915†) and Secunia (SA8115†).
