SGI IRIX XDR Library xdrmem_getbytes integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in SGI IRIX (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function xdrmem_getbytes of the component XDR Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the xdrmem_getbytes() function, and possibly other functions, of XDR (external data representation) libraries derived from SunRPC, including libnsl, libc, glibc, and dietlibc, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain integer values in length fields, a different vulnerability than CVE-2002-0391.

The weakness was disclosed 03/25/2003 by Riley Hassell with eEye as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0028 since 01/10/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13796 (SUSE-SA:2003:027: glibc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2092. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1620.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11563) and Tenable (13796). The entry 79 is pretty similar.
