A vulnerability was found in NetBSD up to 1.5.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function FD_SET
of the component File Descriptors. The manipulation of the argument FD_SETSIZE
with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in (1) mrinfo, (2) mtrace, and (3) pppd in NetBSD 1.4.x through 1.6 allows local users to gain privileges by executing the programs after filling the file descriptor tables, which produces file descriptors larger than FD_SETSIZE, which are not checked by FD_SET().
The weakness was disclosed 04/02/2003 (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1500. The exploitation is known to be easy.
