Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit up to 0.12.x ZIP Archive path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit up to 0.12.x. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component ZIP Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-24. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize "../" sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

mat2 (aka metadata anonymisation toolkit) before 0.13.0 allows ../ directory traversal during the ZIP archive cleaning process. This primarily affects mat2 web instances, in which clients could obtain sensitive information via a crafted archive.

The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2022 as 174. The advisory is shared at 0xacab.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-35410 since 07/08/2022. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 0.13.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch beebca4bf1cd3b935824c966ce077e7bcf610385 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at 0xacab.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
