Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to steal potentially sensitive information from cookies via a cookie that contains script which is executed when a page is loaded, aka the "Script within Cookies Reading Cookies" vulnerability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/08/2000. The weakness was shared 06/09/2003 as MS02-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1564 since 05/29/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1066 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying the patch MS02-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
