A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Ethermint up to 0.17.1. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a exposure of resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-668. The product exposes a resource to the wrong control sphere, providing unintended actors with inappropriate access to the resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Ethermint is an Ethereum library. In Ethermint running versions before `v0.17.2`, the contract `selfdestruct` invocation permanently removes the corresponding bytecode from the internal database storage. However, due to a bug in the `DeleteAccount`function, all contracts that used the identical bytecode (i.e shared the same `CodeHash`) will also stop working once one contract invokes `selfdestruct`, even though the other contracts did not invoke the `selfdestruct` OPCODE. This vulnerability has been patched in Ethermint version v0.18.0. The patch has state machine-breaking changes for applications using Ethermint, so a coordinated upgrade procedure is required. A workaround is available. If a contract is subject to DoS due to this issue, the user can redeploy the same contract, i.e. with identical bytecode, so that the original contract's code is recovered. The new contract deployment restores the `bytecode hash -> bytecode` entry in the internal state.
The weakness was disclosed 08/05/2022 as GHSA-f92v-grc2-w2fg. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-35936 since 07/15/2022. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
Upgrading to version 0.17.2 or 0.18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 144741832007a26dbe950512acbda4ed95b2a451 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
