A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component IP Stack. The manipulation as part of a ICMP Packet leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The Linux 2.0 kernel IP stack does not properly calculate the size of an ICMP citation, which causes it to include portions of unauthorized memory in ICMP error responses.
The issue has been introduced in 06/09/1996. The weakness was presented 07/24/2003 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0418 since 06/11/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2556 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11704 (Linux Kernel IP Stack ICMP Error Response Arbitrary Memory Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 82041 (Linux ICMP Kernel Information Leakage Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12223) and Tenable (11704). See 17928 for similar entry.
