Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and earlier does not properly restrict cross-zone drag-and-drop actions, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to read cookie files via vectors involving an IFRAME element with a SRC attribute containing an http: URL that redirects to a file: URL, as demonstrated by a Facebook game, related to a "cookiejacking" issue, aka "Drag and Drop Information Disclosure Vulnerability." NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix in the Internet Explorer 9 release.
The weakness was shared 02/28/2006 by cyber flash as MS11-057 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2383 since 06/03/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802203 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100100 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cross-Zone Local Cookie File Access Security Bypass Vulnerability (MS11-057)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-057 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
