GNU gzip zgrep xzgrep.in incorrect behavior order: early validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU gzip (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code of the file xzgrep.in of the component zgrep. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incorrect behavior order: early validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-179. The product validates input before applying protection mechanisms that modify the input, which could allow an attacker to bypass the validation via dangerous inputs that only arise after the modification. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An arbitrary file write vulnerability was found in GNU gzip's zgrep utility. When zgrep is applied on the attacker's chosen file name (for example, a crafted file name), this can overwrite an attacker's content to an arbitrary attacker-selected file. This flaw occurs due to insufficient validation when processing filenames with two or more newlines where selected content and the target file names are embedded in crafted multi-line file names. This flaw allows a remote, low privileged attacker to force zgrep to write arbitrary files on the system.

The weakness was shared 08/31/2022. The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-1271 since 04/07/2022. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Applying the patch 69d1b3fc29677af8ade8dc15dba83f0589cb63d6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.tukaani.org.
