SANE up to 1.0.10 saned null termination

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in SANE up to 1.0.10. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component saned. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null termination vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-170. The product does not terminate or incorrectly terminates a string or array with a null character or equivalent terminator. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

saned in sane-backends 1.0.7 and earlier does not quickly handle connection drops, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) when invalid memory is accessed.

The weakness was disclosed 09/22/2003 by Alexander (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0774 since 09/10/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15216 (Debian DSA-379-1 : sane-backends - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115026 (Red Hat SANE Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (15216). The entries 20836, 20838, 20839 and 20840 are pretty similar.
