Apple Mac OS X up to 10.2 /cores symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file /cores. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mac OS X before 10.3 with core files enabled allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files and read core files via a symlink attack on core files that are created with predictable names in the /cores directory.

The weakness was presented 11/03/2003 by Dave G. with @stake (Website). The advisory is shared at atstake.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0877 since 10/23/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as highly functional.

Upgrading to version 10.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (13542). See 20932 for similar entry.
